ADI Fleet Training Diploma

Fleet Training Diploma Course Overview

Our Driving Standards Agency (DSA) accredited Fleet Driver Trainer Course is for those ADIs who want to specialise in providing training to fleet drivers or who wish to take their ability to train to an advanced level.

Clients who successfully complete the course and examinations are eligible to join the DSA Register of Fleet Driver Trainers.

What makes our driving instructor development course different?

Course Requirements:

Fleet trainer qualification is gained through examination:

You must take and pass all 3 parts to qualify and must complete the whole qualifying process within one year. The one-year period starts from the date of the first attempt at the theory test. You have a maximum of three attempts at each of the qualifying tests. 'A.T. Driver Training Consultancy Ltd' will attempt to accommodate re-tests within the course time. Note that the multi-choice-question theory test is scheduled for the first day of the course. Home study is therefore essential and you will be supplied with study materials when your course is booked.

In addition to the above you will be required to undertake the following two workshops:

Effective Communication Skills

The half-day workshop has been designed for those who currently have little or no experience of presenting or speaking in public. The workshop will help you to:

There is no pass/fail examination for this workshop but your ability to communicate effectively will be assessed and appropriate feedback given.

Occupational Health & Safety and the ADI.

A two-hour workshop to bring you up to date on Occupational Health and Safety matters related to company car and other fleet drivers. It provides an overview of Health and Safety law applicable to the ADI. Again, there is no pass or fail for this workshop.

The Theory Test

A pen and paper test of 100 multiple-choice questions which must be completed under examination conditions within 90 minutes. The pass mark is 85%.

The questions have choice of four answers as shown in the example below:

Q1.

Mark one answer
Your vehicle breaks down on the hard shoulder of a motorway. You decide to use your mobile phone to call for help. You should:

a) Stand at the rear of the vehicle while making the call
b) Try to repair the vehicle yourself
c) Get out of the vehicle by the right hand door
d) Check your location from the marker posts on the left

The Driving Ability Test

Unlike other course providers we do not insist that you hold an advanced driving qualification. Our highly qualified trainers will quickly correct bad or dangerous driving habits, and will aim to improve the skill and safety of your driving so that you can make the best use of road and traffic conditions. You will receive instruction on the Eco-SAFE Driving for Economy and the Police Systematic Style of vehicle control, attitude and psychology of driving.

You will need to show that you can deal safely with any of the following:

The test is marked in much the same way as an ADI Part 2 examination except that only FOUR minor faults are permitted in a drive of 60 minutes duration.

The test is of an advanced nature over a demanding route. A high standard of competence is required. You will need to demonstrate that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety and that you can apply this knowledge in practice.

You will be required to demonstrate your ability to give a descriptive talk-through (commentary drive) for at least ten minutes during the test.

You will be asked to carry out one reversing manoeuvre but there will not be an emergency stop exercise.

Candidates whose driving is of a particularly good standard during training may be invited to extend their examination in order to attempt the DIAmond tests. Successful candidates may also then receive the Diamond Advanced Driver certificate or the coveted Diamond Special Test accreditation on completion of the course. Note that an additional fee will be required for Diamond accreditation.

The Instructional/Coaching Ability Test

Giving you the skills required to train at corporate and driver development levels is undertaken using demonstration and role-play techniques that you should be familiar with. We emphasise again that good preparation on your part is the best way to ensure you get the most from the training course. Be prepared to put in additional study time in advance of the course and between daily training sessions.

You must demonstrate your ability/knowledge in the following three key subject areas to qualify:

Core Competencies

Instructional/Coaching Techniques

Trainer Characteristics

Demonstrate your ability to be: Articulate, enthusiastic, encouraging, friendly, patient and confident in your coaching.

These key skills are an extension of your abilities as an Approved Driving Instructor. However, you must recognise that there are significant, though often subtle, differences between the coaching of unqualified 'learners' and experienced drivers. It is usually the case that 'learners' want to learn, but you may need to overcome resistance to change in driving practices by the experienced driver.

Workshops Communication Skills

This highly supported half-day workshop has been designed for those who have little or no experience of marketing or public speaking and is an introduction to presentation techniques. Many potential fleet companies will require an element of 'theory' prior to the practical assessments. You must be positive and affirming and be able to offer companies what is of value to them. Also when facing potential companies you must plan well, and have confidence in generating new 'driver training' business by telephone or face to face.

Most people find public speaking nerve racking when asked to stand up in front of a group and deliver a talk. The good news is that our trainers recognise that it's quite natural for you to feel very nervous or even petrified when having to present for the first time. The even better news is that you can address these issues by utilising a number of simple, practical techniques that you will discover on our course.

This is an enjoyable session but requires some home preparation (opt for a familiar subject such as, a hobby, sport, DIY, previous experience etc.). Guidance can be found in the recommended text Instructional Techniques & Practices for Driving Instructors (see reading list).

Visual aids such as power point, OHP, Flip Charts etc are available on request.

We are able to help you develop your presentation skills even after the course has completed! Our one-day 'Presentation Skills Development Workshop' has been designed for those who want to take their personal presentation skills a step further. You'll be surprised at how much you can progress during our one-day course. Ask your fleet course leader for details or  telephone A.T. Driver Training Consultancy Ltd: 01454 269525 for further information.

Health and Safety Workshop

The session outlines the legal duties and responsibilities that as an Approved Driving Instructor you need to be aware of. It provides information regarding your personal safety, the safety of your colleagues and that of the general public who may be affected by you undertaking your role as an ADI.

'What we hear we forget, what we see we remember, what we do we learn!'

Training at fleet level is for the most part a practical skill and we will not burden you with copious notes to plough through before your course - after all, there is little point in supplying you all the information we intend to impart during the training. However, the course is available to all ADIs, some of whom may have qualified some time ago and would like to refresh their knowledge. Below is a list of publications that are recommended by the DSA along with supplementary reading for those who are keen to take their skills further. You may already have current editions of many of these titles but we can supply them on request at a substantial discount over published prices.

Included in the course fee:
