Health and Safety Regulations:
Employers have a responsibility to manage health and safety effectively.
This legal requirement applies as much to employees who drive as part of their job as it does to employees in a factory or office environment.
This means that employers need to manage road risk in the same way they manage other occupational health and safety risks. Every employer has a legal responsibility to make regular assessments of the risks to health and safety of their employees while at work, and to take remedial action as necessary.
Road traffic crashes and incidents are seldom random events; they generally arise from some failure of control and may involve other contributory elements. The immediate cause may be human or mechanical failure but they usually arise from organisational failings, which are the responsibility of management.
Legislation therefore places emphasis on the importance of ensuring implementation of adequate arrangements for the maintenance of health and safety in the workplace.
Under current UK law, in the event of a fatal road accident involving an employee, a director or member of senior management can be prosecuted for corporate manslaughter when it can be shown that they were negligent in managing the company fleet. The maximum sentence can be life imprisonment. On prosecution the company can also be taken to court with unlimited fines for organisations.
Proposed changes to the law will allow companies to be prosecuted directly when it can be identified that management has failed in it's duty of care by allowing a system of fleet and driver control to operate below a standard that could be reasonably expected.
Aside from complying with legal responsibilities, there are considerable advantages to adopting a comprehensive and driver assessment and training policy.
Assess the Risks:
Last year nearly 3,500 men woman and children were killed on our roads and between 25 and 30% of these tragedies were in work related accidents. As an employer or manager you have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety for all your employees not only whilst they are at work, but also when they are involved in work-related on-road accidents. Furthermore, health and safety regulations mean that you are responsible for ensuring that the public is not put at risk by the work activities of your employees. Ask yourself: Could your company afford the bad press, lost management time and potentially heavy fines associated with an avoidable driving related incident involving one of your employees.
Common sense dictates that prevention is better than cure!
There are numerous benefits of managing work related road safety.
Adopting a structured approach to training and driver development your company can reduce the direct and indirect costs of running your fleet!
Direct costs:

With our help you can act now to implement a policy of improving the standard of driving of your fleet drivers, adopt eco-driving techniques, and save your company from unnecessary expense.
Introducing Occupational Driver Training:
Our Fleet driver courses can combine both theory and practical training. The theory element looks at the risks to individuals such as:
- Drink/Drug Driving
- Fatigue
- Mobile Telephones
- Use Of Speed
Practical in-car assessments and training covers:
- Advanced & defensive driving techniques
- Road procedure
- Space awareness
- Hazard perception
- Driver/passenger safety
- Attitude and approach.
- Dealing with aggressive drivers and 'road rage' incidents.
The most popular service that we provide brings together a Theory Session followed by Driver Assessments and Training. According to the needs of your company, the Theory Session can be carried out with individuals, a small group or your entire staff. At the discretion of your company transport manager, the driver assessment ratio can be 1 trainer to 2 or 3 drivers. It must be appreciated that better results are achieved with a 2 to 1 ratio. Each driver will be initially assessed to identify all risk areas in their driving, offered a comprehensive de-brief followed by appropriate training/coaching methods that prioritises the reduction of the highlighted key risk areas.
On completion of one of our courses your drivers should have developed a systematic approach to hazards and understand how poor time management, attitudes and concentration affects driving performance. Our courses are tailored to suit your company needs, and can cover both theory and practical sessions over a full or half day.
Company drivers whose driving is of a particularly good standard during training may be invited to extend their examination in order to attempt the DIAmond Advanced tests.
